How Google decides who appears in the map pack
Google describes three main factors for local results: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the location in the query) and prominence (how well known and trusted your business is, online and off). Every Google Maps SEO task we do targets one of these three.
Relevance is mostly under your control: categories, services, descriptions and the content of your website. Prominence builds over time from reviews, mentions, links and the strength of your site. Distance you can’t change — and understanding that limit is the difference between a realistic plan and wasted budget.
Proximity: the limit no one can optimise away
A business can rank first for a search made outside its front door and not appear at all a couple of kilometres away. That isn’t a fault in the profile; it is how local search is designed. It is also why checking your ranking from your own office tells you very little.
What we can do is extend the radius where you compete. Stronger relevance and prominence let a business appear further from its location, especially where competitors are weaker. We measure that with grid tracking and set targets you can actually reach. We won’t sell you on appearing across an entire city from one address, and we won’t set up listings at addresses you don’t operate from.
Google Business Profile optimization, field by field
Categories
Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals on the profile. We compare the categories used by the businesses winning your searches, choose the most accurate primary category and add secondary categories only where they reflect services you really offer. The wrong primary category can keep a business out of results it should appear in.
Services, products and attributes
We list your services and products the way customers describe them, add descriptions where the platform allows, and set the attributes that apply to you — accessibility, payment options, languages, appointment requirements and others relevant to your category. These details help Google match you to specific searches and help customers decide.
Photos and videos
Real photos of your premises, team, work and vehicles do more than stock images. We plan a regular photo routine, make sure the cover image and logo are right, and check that customer-uploaded photos aren’t misrepresenting you.
Posts, messages and questions
Posts keep offers, updates and events visible on the profile. Where Google still shows questions and answers or messaging for your profile, we monitor them so customers get accurate replies and a competitor or stranger isn’t answering for you.
Our Google Business Profile checklist covers the basic setup if you want to review your own profile first.
Reviews: velocity, content and replies
Reviews feed prominence and are often the deciding factor for the customer. Three things matter: a steady flow of new reviews rather than a burst followed by silence, reviews that describe the actual service, and replies from the business. We set up a request routine that fits how you work — a message after a job, a card at reception, a follow-up after an appointment — and a reply process for every review, including the negative ones.
We never buy reviews, offer incentives for them or filter who gets asked. Google removes such reviews and can restrict profiles that collect them.
Verification, suspensions and spam
Profiles get suspended more often than most owners expect — after an address change, a name change, an edit that looks unusual or a report from a competitor. We help with verification, including video verification, and when a profile is suspended we find the likely cause, fix it and submit a documented reinstatement request.
Spam is the other side. In many categories, the map pack contains fake locations, keyword-stuffed names or businesses with bought reviews. We document clear violations and report them through Google’s official channels. Removing a fake competitor can change the map pack more than weeks of optimisation — though we can’t control how quickly Google acts.
Protecting the profile from unwanted edits
Your profile isn’t only edited by you. Customers and other users can suggest changes, and Google sometimes updates details such as hours, categories or the website link based on other sources. Most of these edits are harmless; some quietly change your phone number or mark you as closed. We monitor the profile for changes, restore incorrect details and keep your website, listings and profile saying the same thing, which makes unwanted edits less likely to stick. The same monitoring catches duplicate listings, which often appear after a move or a rebrand and split your reviews and visibility between two profiles.
Grid rank tracking
We track your map position from a grid of points across your service area, run on a fixed schedule for your most important searches. The result is a heat map of where you appear, where you drop off and where specific competitors dominate. It shows whether work is widening your reach and helps decide where a new location page or review focus would help most.
Measuring what Maps actually delivers
Map rankings aren’t the goal; the actions that follow are. We track calls from the profile, direction requests, website clicks and messages, and connect website visits from the profile to calls, WhatsApp messages and form enquiries on your site. Monthly reports lead with those actions and explain what changed. For an example of how this works in one sector, see how dental clinics approach Google Maps rankings.
When Maps work isn’t enough on its own

If your visibility problem goes beyond the profile, our full local SEO service covers local landing pages, citations and the website alongside Maps. Businesses in Dubai, where map results are split community by community, should also see our approach to local SEO in Dubai.
