It is rarely luck
Search for “dentist” or “dental implants” in almost any area and you’ll notice the same few clinics appearing in the map results again and again. Patients tap one of those three listings, call or ask for directions, and book. Clinics outside that group often have good dentists and fair prices but see few enquiries from Google Maps.
The clinics that dominate usually aren’t doing anything secret. They have simply got a set of basics right and kept them right for a long time. Google’s local results weigh three broad things — relevance (does this profile match the search?), distance (how close is it to the searcher?) and prominence (how well known and trusted is the clinic?). Everything below maps onto one of those three.
1. Primary and secondary categories
The primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals on the profile. “Dentist” and “Dental clinic” are different categories, and more specific options exist for specialties such as orthodontics, cosmetic dentistry, pediatric dentistry, endodontics or oral surgery. Clinics that dominate have usually chosen the primary category that best matches the searches they want, then added the secondary categories that genuinely apply.
What to fix first: check which primary category the clinics outranking you use for your most important searches. If your clinic offers several specialties, make sure each one you actually provide appears as a secondary category — without adding options you don’t offer.
2. Services with real descriptions
Many clinics leave the services section empty or list three items. Stronger profiles list every treatment they provide — check-ups, hygiene, fillings, root canal treatment, crowns, implants, clear aligners, whitening, emergency appointments, children’s dentistry — using the terms patients actually search, with short factual descriptions.
What to fix first: add your full list of treatments, and make sure each important one also has a matching page on your website that goes into proper detail.
3. Reviews: steady, genuine, answered
Reviews affect both where you rank and whether patients choose you. Clinics that dominate tend to have a steady flow of recent reviews rather than a burst from years ago, and they reply to them.
What to fix first:
- Ask every patient, at the right moment, with a direct review link. Make it part of the front-desk routine rather than an occasional campaign.
- Don’t offer discounts or gifts for reviews, and don’t filter who gets asked. That breaks platform rules and can backfire.
- Reply to reviews briefly and professionally. In healthcare, be careful never to confirm someone is a patient or discuss treatment details in a public reply.
- Treat recurring complaints — waiting times, billing surprises, phone access — as operational issues, not just review problems.
4. Photos that show a real clinic
Patients want to know what to expect before they walk in. Profiles with clear photos of the entrance, reception, treatment rooms, equipment and the dental team feel more trustworthy than those with a logo and a stock image.
What to fix first: upload a set of real, current photos — especially the exterior, so patients can find you — and add new ones regularly as the clinic changes. Avoid before-and-after images unless you are certain they are permitted under the advertising rules that apply to you.
5. Treatment pages that back up the profile
The clinics that dominate Google Maps almost always have strong websites behind their profiles. Google uses the website to confirm what the clinic does, and patients use it to decide. A single “Our Services” page listing twenty treatments is much weaker than dedicated pages for the treatments that matter most.
A useful treatment page explains who the treatment is for, how the process works, how many visits it usually takes, what affects the cost, which dentist provides it and their credentials, and how to book. It should be accurate and appropriately cautious — no promises of outcomes. Dental advertising is regulated in most markets, including DHA requirements in Dubai, MOHAP or DOH rules elsewhere in the UAE and the Heilmittelwerbegesetz in Germany, so keep compliance in mind when writing claims.
What to fix first: link your profile to the most relevant page, and build proper pages for your two or three highest-value treatments before anything else. Our dental SEO service covers how we structure treatment pages and dentist profiles.
6. Accept the limits of proximity
This is the part many clinics find frustrating. Distance is a real factor, and no amount of optimisation will make a clinic in one district appear in the map pack for every search across a whole city. A clinic in Dubai Marina will struggle to show in Google Maps for someone searching in Deira — and that is how local search is supposed to work.
What you can do:
- Make sure the pin sits exactly on your clinic, and that the address matches your licence and website.
- Win strongly in the area around you before worrying about areas further away.
- Use your website to reach patients further afield through organic results for specific treatments, which depend less on distance.
- If you have several branches, give each real location its own profile and landing page.
Don’t try to get around distance with virtual offices or fake addresses. Those profiles tend to be suspended, and it can take a long time to recover. In dense markets such as Dubai, where many clinics share the same few communities, this matters even more; our page on dental SEO in Dubai covers the local specifics.
7. Track bookings, not just views
Your Google Business Profile shows calls, website clicks and direction requests. That is a start, but it doesn’t tell you how many appointments you booked. Clinics that grow from Google Maps know which enquiries came from search and what those patients booked.
What to fix first:
- Add UTM tags to your profile’s website link so that visits appear separately in analytics.
- Track calls, WhatsApp clicks and online booking completions from your website.
- Ask your front desk to record how new patients found the clinic.
- Compare enquiries and bookings month by month rather than chasing positions for a single keyword.
The order that usually works
If you are starting from scratch, work in this order:
- Correct the category, pin, name, hours and contact details.
- Fill in services and attributes, and link to the most relevant page.
- Set up tracking so you can measure the effect of everything that follows.
- Build a steady review routine and reply to reviews.
- Upload real photos and keep adding them.
- Create or improve pages for your highest-value treatments.
None of this is dramatic, which is why so many clinics skip it. The clinics that dominate Google Maps usually do all of it and keep doing it. If you want an expert view of how your profile compares with the clinics around you, our Google Maps SEO work starts with exactly that comparison.
